Along the way, he felt deep sympathy for Wen Sao—a widow whose husband had been killed—and her children, and he frequently offered them assistance. Through this connection, he met his former classmate, Tao Lan, and the two soon developed romantic feelings for one another; however, his sense of sympathy and responsibility toward Wen Sao created a conflict that weighed heavily on him. Ultimately, he decided to marry Wen Sao—a decision that left Tao Lan shocked and bewildered, convinced that his choice was driven by anything but love. Meanwhile, Qian Zhengxing intervened, offering financial support and attempting to mediate the situation, thereby entangling Xiao Jianqiu in an even more complex web of interpersonal conflicts and emotional turmoil.
