Later, the Director of the County Commission for Discipline Inspection summoned Wang Chang'an to the county seat and presented him with a commendation certificate—bearing the collective thumbprints of his villagers—designating him as a model of integrity. This honor, however, only deepened Wang Chang'an's unease; was the turtle on his door a curse, or was it a bribe? He racked his brains trying to figure it out. He and Dafeng analyzed the situation: Ma Niu, the villager who had contracted the fishpond, had recently visited their home; surely, he must have been seeking a favor and attempting to bribe them. Dafeng went to Ma Niu’s home and managed to glean some clues from his wife, Gaidi. However, Gaidi completely misunderstood Dafeng’s intentions and, instead, had Ma Niu deliver *another* soft-shelled turtle. In the ensuing panic, the turtle was accidentally stuffed into the bag of Director Qian from the Discipline Commission, leaving Wang Chang'an in a predicament where he was utterly unable to defend himself. Two other villagers—Wangwang, a shrewd opportunist, and Maisui, who feared losing her "Filial Piety Star" rating following a minor spat with her mother-in-law—also had favors to ask of the village head. Observing Wang Chang'an’s distress over the turtle affair, they seized the opportunity to falsely claim that *they* were the ones who had hung the turtle on his door. In his desperate scramble to solve the "turtle mystery," Wang Chang'an blundered his way through a series of comical mishaps. Finally, when Maisui’s husband, Yangyu, returned and revealed the true, innocent story behind the soft-shelled turtle, everyone burst into laughter—laughing with pure, unadulterated joy.
